Why take the environmental impact assessment training course

Projects in many sectors, e.g oil and gas, cannot be executed without first assessing the implications of the developments on the ecosystem, where the projects will be sited, and submitting an EIA report to regulatory bodies.

EIA aims to identify, predict, evaluate and mitigate the biophysical, social and other relevant effects of project proposals before making major project decisions or commitments. Hence EIA is a planning tool used to aid decision making before certain projects, programmes or policy decisions are made.

EIAs are usuallly compulsory for projects that are expected to have significant environmental impacts: e.g oil and gas projects; projects that will affect landscape/land use patterns and cause an increase in population; those involving the production and handling of harzardous substances; those that will be located at eccologically sensitive areas, residential areas; and any project that will have a significant negative impacton the ecosystem.

Therefore, EIA is not only about obtaining a permit but also to ensure sustainable development whereby the proposed project becomes beneficial to all stakeholders and the natural environment.

The environmental impact assessment training course will equip participants with the knowledege and skills to successfully take part in conducting an environmental impact assessment and writing an EIA report that meets regulatory requirements.

What is the Training Schedule

2 DAYS

• Time: 10:00am - 3:00pm Daily (or 2 weekends)

• Date: We conduct environment impact assessment forthnightly from January to December (except public holidays).

• Training Schedule: Thursdays - Fridays; Lagos and Port Harcourt centers | Saturdays (some training centers).

What are the Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

• take part in EIA and continously monitor the impact of a given project on the ecosystem,

• understand the functions of regulatory requirements regarding the environment,

• understand the role of EIA as an environmental management tool to aid decision making,

• understand environmental regulatory guidelines on projects,

• collect data and develop an environmental management plan which will outline measures to mitigate the adverse impacts on the environment throughout the project life cycle,

• develop EIA report and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

• Introduction to environment impact assessment (EIA),

• EIA laws and regulations,

• How to conduct EIA via the 7 steps:

- Screening: which is done to determine if the impact of a project is significant enough to warrant an EIA. Or else an environmental management plan (EMP) will be developed and monitored during the project life-cycle,

- Scoping: is done to define the boundaries of the EIA, determine the basis of analyses that will be carried out at each stage, determine the project alternatives, and consult the concerned stakeholders/affected public.

- Impact assessment and mitigation: to evaluate the socioeconomic & environmental impacts of the project and its alternatives, and profer control measures to reduce the impacts,

- Impact management: prepare the plans for addressing mitigating measures,

- The EIA Report: document the entire process and ensure all the key components are included,

- Review and submision to relevant bodies for permits or amendments, and

- Monitoring to ensure the mitigating measures and contingency plans are properly implemented and effectively address the impacts of the project.
