Course overview

Manual handling hse training, otherwise known as moving manual material handling, involves the safe use of the hands and bodily movements to transport load materials. Incorrect manual handling is one of the leading causes of occupational injuries to employees.

This manual material handling hse training course teaches participants the principles, skills and techniques to safely perform manual handling operations, risk assessment and develop plans for safe handling of heavy load.

How long does a manual handling training take?

1 Day (or a weekend) including the assessment examination.

• Time: 10:00am - 3:00pm

• Date: We conduct manual handling training once a month from January to December.

• Introduction to manual handling.

• Legislation: who does manual handling affect?, duties of employers and employees.

• Hazards associated with manual materials handling: musculoskeletal disorders, slips, trips, falls, overexertion, repetitive motion.

• Risk assessment: hazards and the potential to cause harm or damage.

• What are the four key areas to consider when planning safe manual handling? TILE- the task, the individual, the load, and the environment.

• Preventing and controlling the risks: avoiding manual handling, team handling, mechanical aids, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), job hazard analysis.

• Safe manual handling techniques: practical demonstration of various lifting and materials handling techniques.

• Course summary and final assessment


Candidates would be assessed by:

• a written assessment of 20 multiple choice questions to be answered in 30 minutes;

• participants are expected to score a pass mark of 80%, and

• you can take the assessment as many times as you want at no extra charge.

There are no specific barriers, in terms of academic qualifications, skills or experience to entry to the manual materials handling hse training course.

The course is open to employees that engage in manual materials handling operations. Employers, managers, supervisors, and safety supervisors will also benefit from the training.
